Google Sidebar and Desktop

Google has impressed me yet again. The new Google SideBar is very neat. I used to have my instant messenger (Trillian Pro) docked on the left side, with the auto hide feature. Now I have side bar on the left as well, and Trillian just pops over the top of it when I mouse to the edge of my screen.

What is SideBar then and why is it so cool? It lets me track my stocks, weather, email, latest news, and web clips (other people's blogs). It has a few other features and what not as well, such as a scratch pad, so when I need to jot down a quick note, and can't find my pen again, I simply use that.
